Before we could form, the YORKTOWN was attacked by enemy aircraft. For the next hour the ENTERPRISE fighter director directed the combat air patrol on various suspicious contacts. Our radar screen picked up many contacts, but all enemy planes concentrated on the YORKTOWN, which was sending up dense smoke. At about 1130 the radar screen was clear of enemy planes. 1130 Relieved combat air patrol. The base course for the rest of the day was 280 true, speed was 20 knots. We steamed on the base course at 30 knots, closing the ENTERPRISE except when conducting flight operations. Average steam 400. Average R.P.M. 265.5.

  Steaming as before. 1241 Recovered some fighters who were low on gas. 1300 Picked up large group of planes bearing 260 true, distant 56 miles. 1312 Sighted planes of our group returning from morning flight. 1312 Turned into wind and commenced recovering aircraft. Steaming on va­rio­us courses and speeds. Steadied on course 130 true. 1409 Completed recovery of aircraft. The following planes failed to return: 15 (all) torpedo bombers, 14 scout bombers, and 10 fighters. Note: At about 1400 we received word from Midway that 11 scout bombers from the HORNET had landed there. They were to be re-fueled and sent out again. Our air group which returned did not find the enemy. They searched until their gas was low, then jettissoned their bombs and returned. It is believed that the torpedo planes made their attack. However, nothing has been heard of them since. 1409 Resumed base course. Radar reported much activity ahead of us in the direction of the YORKTOWN. 1410 YORKTOWN reported that she was being attacked by aircraft. The sky in her di­rec­tion was filled with anti-aircraft bursts. 1419 On orders from O.T.C. the NEW ORLEANS and VINCENNES plus two destroyers proceeded to the aid of the YORKTOWN. HORNET launched five fighters to augment combat air patrol. At this time the attack seemed to be over. All fighters short on gas and ammunition were ordered to land. YORKTOWN planes were

All these officers and men were at their battle stations. The Pilot, Ensign SHEALEY, had been wounded in the right ankle and lower leg while fighting over the YOHKTOWN. 1453 Launched three more fighters. 1516 Com­menced recovering aircraft. 8-F-17 failed to return from combat pat­rol. 1530 Resumed base course.
