2 AIRCRAFT SQUADRON ABBREVIATIONS: |
BACK ▲ |
U.S. aircraft units: U.S. naval aircraft squadrons were designated with the initial V (means heavier than air) or VM for Marine Corps squadrons; second by the initial(s) of type aircraft (B – bomber, F – fighter, SB – scout-bomber, S – scouting, P – patrol, T – torpedo bomber); then by the hull number of the home carrier for carrier-based squadrons, or by the number of squadron for land-based units.
IJN aircraft units: Japanese carrier-based aircraft squadrons were designated with the home carrier name, then by the type of planes, composing squadron (kanjō sentōkitai – fighter squadron, kanjō bakugekitai – dive-bomber squadron, kanjō kōgekitai – torpedo squadron). In this Order of the Battle american-style abbreviations with the initials of home carriers were used (i.e. AVF means Akagi fighter squadron, KVB – Kaga bombing squadron and so on.)
